The fourth phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on May 13 includes various states like Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh. Vote counting is on June 4.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Vice-Chairman has been served a contempt notice by the Supreme Court for cutting down more than 1,000 trees to build a road near Maidan Garhi, connecting Chattarpur Road and SAARC University. Justices B R Gavai and Sandeep Mehta highlighted that the DDA defied a court order against tree felling.
The Supreme Court has put on hold the imprisonment of Congress MLA Mohammed Moquim in a corruption case. Justices Surya Kant and Dipankar Datta have asked the Odisha government to respond to Moquim's appeal against the Orissa High Court's ruling. Earlier, the High Court rejected Moquim's challenge to a vigilance court's decision, which sentenced him to three years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 for corruption.
Attorney general R Venkataramani, representing the Centre apprised the court that the Election Commission has allowed the Union government to deal with the issue and something will happen before next Monday (April 29). The court was hearing Karnataka government plea seeking financial assistance for drought relief. The Karnataka government was represented by senior advocate Kapil Sibal.
Sikkim Assembly elections saw 79.77% turnout, Lok Sabha at 80.03%. Friday had 32 Assembly segments with improved turnout. Yoksom-Tashiding had highest, Gangtok (BL) lowest. 146 candidates including Chief Minister contested.
